Why Auckland patients choose Hamilton for plastic surgery
Auckland has excellent plastic surgeons — but it also has Auckland pricing, Auckland waiting times, and a patient population that means some of the city's best specialists are heavily booked. For procedures like upper blepharoplasty, facelift, breast reduction, or a tummy tuck, a significant number of patients are now making the comparison and choosing to travel south.
There are three main reasons patients from Auckland, Tauranga, and the wider North Island book with Dr Yaprak in Hamilton:
- Shorter wait times. Many Auckland practices have consultation waiting times of 6–12 weeks or more for cosmetic procedures. In Hamilton, you can typically be seen within 2–3 weeks.
- All-inclusive pricing. Dr Yaprak's quotes include the surgeon, anaesthetist, hospital (Braemar Private Hospital), nursing, consumables, and six weeks of follow-up. There are no line items added after the fact.
- Specialist credentials. Dr Yaprak holds FEBOPRAS (Fellow of the European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons), is a member of NZAPS, and has completed advanced surgical training at some of the world's leading plastic surgery centres. The quality of care is not a regional compromise — it's a genuine choice.
Already making the trip: Patients regularly travel to see Dr Yaprak from Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua, Whanganui, and further afield. For some procedures — particularly upper blepharoplasty under local anaesthetic — the consultation and surgery can be arranged on the same day or on consecutive days, making it practical to combine both visits into one trip.
How far is Hamilton from Auckland?
Hamilton is approximately 130km south of Auckland — around 75–90 minutes by car via the Southern Motorway and State Highway 1 under normal traffic conditions. Allow a little longer during peak hours.
There is no direct flight between Auckland and Hamilton — the most practical way to travel is by car. If you are unable to drive yourself, a friend or family member accompanying you is the best option, or a private transfer service from Auckland to Hamilton can be arranged.
Tauranga patients are approximately 90 minutes away via State Highway 29.
What procedures work well for travelling patients?
Some procedures suit out-of-town patients particularly well. The key factor is whether you need to remain in Hamilton post-operatively, or whether you can safely return home the same day or the following morning.
| Procedure | Anaesthetic | Same-day travel home? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upper blepharoplasty | Local | Yes — same day | Popular with Auckland patients. Procedure done in-rooms. Local anaesthetic lasts ~4 hours. Bring paracetamol for the journey. Must have a driver. |
| Brow lift | Local | Yes — same day | Day procedure in-rooms. Same logistics as upper blepharoplasty. |
| Local anaesthetic facelift | Local | No — overnight stay required | Procedure takes approximately 5 hours. Overnight stay in Hamilton required. Must return at day 3 for net suture removal, then again at 2 weeks. |
| Otoplasty (adults) | Local | Yes — same day | Day procedure. Same logistics apply. |
| Facelift | General | No — 1 night minimum | Performed at Braemar Private Hospital. Plan to stay in Hamilton 1–2 nights post-operatively before travelling home. |
| Breast reduction / augmentation | General | No — 1–2 nights | Stay in Hamilton 1–2 nights. Short journey home by car (not flying) is appropriate from day 2–3 post-op. |
| Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) | General | No — 2–3 nights | Stay in Hamilton for 2–3 nights. Comfortable car travel home is fine from day 3 with a supportive garment. |
| Neck lift | General | No — 1–2 nights | Braemar Private Hospital. Plan 1–2 nights in Hamilton. |
For same-day procedures under local anaesthetic, you cannot drive yourself home — you must have someone with you. If you're travelling alone from Auckland, consider arranging a driver or booking a rideshare in advance. Some patients fly in with a friend or partner specifically for this.
Can I combine the consultation and surgery into one trip?
No. A minimum of two separate visits to Hamilton is required for all procedures — this is not simply a recommendation but a requirement under NZAPS (New Zealand Association of Plastic Surgeons) guidelines. There must be at least two weeks between your consultation and any surgery.
Your first visit is your consultation — Dr Yaprak will assess your anatomy, discuss your goals, and provide an honest clinical opinion. You will then receive a written all-inclusive quote. A second consultation is required before proceeding to surgery; depending on the procedure and your circumstances, this second consultation may sometimes be conducted via Zoom rather than in person — ask the rooms when booking.
This two-visit minimum exists to protect you. It gives you time to reflect, ask follow-up questions, and make a properly informed decision — not a rushed one.

Step-by-step: how an Auckland patient typically plans their surgery
- 1 Contact the rooms and book a consultation Call 07 838 8984 or use the online contact form at dryaprak.co.nz to request a consultation. Let the team know you're travelling from Auckland so they can schedule you appropriately and allow enough time.
- 2 Consultation — $267 Drive or fly to Hamilton for your initial consultation with Dr Yaprak. He'll examine your anatomy, discuss your goals, and provide an honest assessment of what's appropriate. Allow 30–45 minutes. This is not a high-pressure sales appointment — it's a clinical assessment.
- 3 Receive your written quote Within a few days of consultation you'll receive an all-inclusive written quote covering everything — surgeon, hospital, anaesthetist, nursing, consumables, and follow-up. No surprises later.
- 4 Pre-operative appointment (if needed) A second consultation is required before all procedures — NZAPS guidelines require a minimum of two weeks between consultation and surgery. Depending on your procedure and circumstances, this second consultation may be conducted via Zoom rather than in person. All consultations after your initial visit are complimentary.
- 5 Surgery day Arrive in Hamilton the evening before or morning of surgery. For GA procedures at Braemar, you'll be given specific fasting and arrival instructions. For local anaesthetic procedures at Waikato Specialist Centre, you'll be seen during normal consulting hours.
- 6 Recovery and follow-up Six weeks of follow-up care is included in your quote. Your first follow-up (suture removal or wound check) will be in Hamilton — usually 5–7 days after surgery. Subsequent follow-ups can often be arranged to align with your work schedule and travel plans.
What about follow-up appointments after I return to Auckland?
This is the question most Auckland patients ask. The honest answer: most follow-up appointments are brief and straightforward, but they do require an in-person visit to Hamilton. Suture removal timings vary by procedure — facial sutures are removed at 14 days, body sutures at 7 days. For local anaesthetic facelift patients, there is also a net suture removal at day 3. Plan your Hamilton visits around these timings when booking travel and accommodation.
For patients who genuinely cannot travel back, Dr Yaprak will discuss options at consultation — but for most people the 5–7 day suture removal visit is worth planning around. It's a short appointment, and many patients combine it with other commitments in Hamilton or make a morning trip of it.
If you have a local GP or nurse who can perform suture removal, this is sometimes an option — discuss with the rooms when booking.
From our patients: A number of patients who've travelled from Auckland have commented that the lower overall cost — even factoring in travel and one night's accommodation — came out meaningfully lower than equivalent Auckland quotes for the same procedure. This is particularly true for upper blepharoplasty (from $4,500 all-inclusive) and local anaesthetic facelift (~$16,500 all-inclusive).
Is it safe to travel after surgery?
Short car travel (1–2 hours) is generally safe within a few days of most procedures, provided you are a passenger and not driving, wearing a supportive garment where appropriate, and not experiencing any complications.
Flying after surgery requires more care. For procedures involving general anaesthetic — facelift, tummy tuck, breast surgery — domestic air travel is typically appropriate from around day 5–7 onwards, depending on recovery. Dr Yaprak will give you specific guidance for your procedure at consultation.
Long-haul international travel after surgery carries significantly higher risks (DVT in particular) and should not be planned for at least 4–6 weeks post-operatively for major procedures. This is worth keeping in mind if you have overseas travel planned.
Ready to take the next step?
The first step is simply a conversation. Call the rooms, describe what you're considering, and the team can advise whether a consultation makes sense and what to expect from the process. There's no obligation from an initial enquiry — and the consultation itself is a proper clinical assessment, not a sales appointment.
